You’ve got to expect true outdoor living when you’re a stone’s throw from Possum Kingdom Lake and State Park. And living close to nature is exactly what you get at Wildlife Ranch Lodge at Marluc Bella Vita Ranch. With over 1,500 feet of tree-lined shore, Wildlife Ranch Lodge is packed to the gills with waterfront activity.Wildlife Ranch Lodge
The nearly 200-acre wildlife retreat and education center tucked into the hills of the Edwards Plateau, west of Dallas and south of Jacksboro, features a stocked four-acre lake and several other fishing sources as well as five partially covered docks ready to launch you and up to 34 others guests into a water-ful adventure.
The lodge’s Godspell Lake runs 14- to 40-feet deep and is an oasis for fishing, swimming, kayaking and boating. The lodge makes available a canoe and three kayaks; their pontoon boat is available to rent. And you may want to, in double-time, if the 15,000 bass, bluegill, channel catfish and more aren’t biting from shore. According to recent fishers, the bass are a heaving two pounds, while the catfish weigh in at even more.
If you get tired of pulling in your haul, rest your bones in the pea gravel beds located around the lake. And if there’s a chance you or the group may want a break from the lake and water slide, make tracks to and/or around the four-mile hike and bike trail surrounding the forested lake and meadow. Check out the lit sports complex, complete with baseball, basketball and sand volleyball courts plus a soccer practice field with net. Follow your nose to the picnic area, snacks or suppertime fixins in tow, and do what comes natural. As soon as supper is finished and stowed, be the hero of the trip — bring out the s’mores and spark a flame at the fire pit. Then, after the moon and stars have filled up the night sky and shown everyone to bed, wake up refreshed. Have another round of the grounds. Like a best friend, nature’s there for you.
Reach Wildlife Ranch Lodge easily from Dallas for a weekend of waterfront fun.
Get yourself and seven of your closest friends and fam (plus your dog) ready to splash in the San Gabriel River at family- and pet-friendly Rocky Overlook on Scurlock Farms in Texas Hill Country just north of Austin.
The ribbon of the San Gabriel River forms the northern border of the nearly 200-acre Scurlock Farms. It beckons Rocky Overlook guests of all ages during the hot summer season, when swimming, tubing and fishing (catfish and bass) rank high on guests’ itinerary. Also high on the list of things to do is lounge under the graceful live oaks, bird watch until you see a “lifer” (one you’ve seen and identified for the first time), and enjoy stellar sunsets from the bluff above the river.
Of course, you can touch history and the farm’s animals without straying far from the San Gabriel. Stroll the grounds freely while you hunt for fossils and Tonkawa Indian arrowheads or the horses Ginger and Duster; feed them carrots you smuggled from home, or if the season’s right, maybe Sheron can supply you with some fresh from the farm.
Staying at Scurlock Farm’s Rocky Overlook makes it easy to connect with nature. The home itself was designed by Steward Sheron’s mother, a favored artist of President Lyndon B. Johnson. The home was also hand-constructed with materials from the San Gabriel, including local cedar that would never have to be painted, and river stones that were collected and set one by one when Sheron’s father built the home.
The home, a five-minute walk from the San Gabriel, respects nature and the land in even more ways. The home uses energy-efficient appliances and laundry detergent, and paper products from recycled paper. Guests are invited to recycle and compost.
As good stewards of the land, Scurlock Farms’ animals cell graze. Its staff harvests several thousand gallons of rain water from the roofs of their homes to use in their gardens. They use repurposed, composted potting soil from a wholesale nursery for their raised bed gardens. And they control the insect population naturally with chickens that free-range and by maintaining bat and purple martin houses.
The 1,200-acre Lake Georgetown is nearby and offers boating, watersports and more than a dozen miles of hiking trails.
Come for the sunsets; stay for the English-style breakfast. A romantic spot in the Texas heartland, the Pond Cottage at Boldheart Farms lets you enjoy the fresh air and serenity of an unplugged holiday getaway in nature and on a farm; or as Steward Miss Maggie says, “Disconnect from the internet, and reconnect with your food supply.”
The Pond Cottage is located the perfect distance from Austin and San Antonio, for when you want to trade in the workweek blues for the sweet seclusion and fiery hues of a Boldheart Farms weekend sunset.
A cozy spot for two, Pond Cottage’s porch offers the best (and only) seats to that particular light show by nature.
So relax under the Texas skies, and relish the sense of comfort, calm and awe that comes when the sun fiery performance at day’s end is reflected on the surface of your pond.
And you’re welcome to the veggies, garden-grown seasonal herbs, farm-fresh eggs and flowers — cut a bunch and keep them in your cottage. Fill up on rest, then fill up on Steward Miss Maggie’s farm-fresh, English-style country breakfast. Every morning of your stay Miss Maggie will delight you with delicious scones, baked goods, seasonal fruits, cheeses and more, whose ingredients are organic and locally sourced.
Miss Maggie’s stewardship goes beyond what the farm produces to how the farm produces: Non-toxic and energy-efficient products are used at Boldheart Farms. They recycle, compost and use regenerative agriculture. Miss Maggie also teaches guests about the farm’s plants and animals and how to care for them.
“So drop your phone and let us lift your spirits,” says Miss Maggie. Come see what the no-fuss is all about at Boldheart.
