Dive into Texas agritourism at dog-friendly Scurlock Farm

Scurlock Farm

Scurlock Farm in Georgetown, Texas, offers kid- and pet-friendly activities and accommodations in the vicinity of InnerSpace Caverns, Lake Georgetown, two state parks and Georgetown’s “Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas.”

One of the farm’s dog-friendly accommodations, the Palette Pad, Rural Cabin on Working Farm, is made for a total of two guests and pets who love to lounge in the hammock or near the fireplace. It also caters to those who buzz with activity and who may want to feed the farm animals or hold their newborns, hike, fish, drive a tractor, gather eggs or pecans, or help plant in spring or fall.

Rocky Overlook, Rural Waterfront Home on a Working Farm, is a special place. It was designed by Steward Sheron’s mother, one of President LBJ’s favorite artists. And it was built by Sheron’s father. It’s constructed of river rocks collected by her parents from a San Gabriel island on the property. Another dog- and pet-friendly vacation spot (for eight) on this Texas farm, its five-minute walk to the San Gabriel River promises hours filled with fishing, fossil-hunting, swimming and tubing, or simply sitting on the white limestone banks and watching others do it all. The sunsets from the high bluff above the river are can’t-miss. Park it at the picnic table and just wait.

The farm’s Steward, Sheron Scurlock, offers the Scurlock Farm Tour and animal meet-and-greet, which come with every stay; the tour happens in a Polaris off-road vehicle, which is built to tackle the Texas terrain in a way your dog likely would approve of. And if at the end of your stay your dog leaves any scraps, Sheron requests that you don’t throw out food when leaving. She and the farm practice good stewardship of the land and its inhabitants and the food will be used or donated.

Steward Sheron knows every inch of the well-stewarded land — from trees and gardens to ravines and marked hiking trails — and she will be happy to share her knowledge.

Explore Texas Hill Country with your dog at the BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch

The Texas Farmhouse

BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch is located about an hour west of Houston in Cat Spring, Texas, known locally as the rolling hills of Texas Hill Country. Everyone in your party will find space to run or roam amidst centuries-old live oaks, lakes and wildlife on this 500-acre working guest ranch.

The ranch has Texas-sized charm and Texas-sized land that offers an array of accommodations, including The Texas Farmhouse. Your pets will feel welcome down to the dog figurines in the upstairs bedroom at this restored two-story Texas farmhouse complete with picket fence and turn-of-the-century antiques made equally for family escapes as for romantic getaways with a tagalong tail-wagger.

Here you can play fetch alongside Enchanted Lake, or just take in a picnic at its nearby gazebo. Take interesting turns on your daily walks and spot the historic homes, farmhouses, log cabins and even a conestoga wagon stay that dot the ranch land.

Your pets may not be interested in the nearby archery, horseback riding, catch and release fishing or trapshooting (with or without your own gear), but they may beg to join you for an outing to the local dessert bar, steak house, brewing company and prairie chicken national wildlife refuge.

Horseback riding with dog

The property’s Conestoga Covered Wagon stay is a one-room, two-guest accommodation that will bring out the pioneer in you and will also be a hit with the kids, those enchanted with history, or who love western movies and/or Little House on the Prairie. It’s up to you whether you tell everyone in your party that the modern conveniences (air conditioner, shower, mini-fridge, coffeemaker and other kitchen electronics) are unique to the wagon’s 21st century experience. Any reasonable pet will understand the wagon is stationary and they won’t be called on to trot behind the hitched-up wagon during your stay.

Both The Texas Farmhouse in Cat Spring, TX, and the Conestoga Covered Wagon at  BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch are easily accessible from Houston, San Antonio and Austin. The pet-friendly getaways are ideal for relaxing and agritourism. They contain a fenced-in area for your dog to explore off-leash as well as an expansive property that’s ripe for exploring.

The River House Interior

The most challenging thing about your family, friend and furry friend stay at this stunning Texas home will be deciding everyone’s most preferred way to unwind: Gathered in the living room, catching up over a cold drink? Watching movies on the large wall-mounted flatscreen TV (cable, Blu-ray DVD players and wifi included)? Or playing games across the round ottoman?

However it shakes out, relaxation will be the group’s reward. When it comes to nightfall, you’re likely to reach consensus: All hands up for adjourning to the fire pit, where there’s a seat for every human member of your crew. There is plenty of room for your pooch to pick a favored lap or cozy spot nearby.

Rest assured, the River House also is made for a peaceful sleep. Each bedroom retreat holds a cushy king-size bed that from daybreak on offers a breathtaking view of the river or the grounds. Members of your party are welcome to retreat to the loft and curl up in one of the adult-friendly bunk beds’ high-quality mattresses; the loft sleeps six. Two more guests can sleep in two rollaway beds.

If you find yourself hankering for good times away from the River House, the wineries, brewery and microbrewery, museums, historical sights, barbecue, cosmopolitan dining and shops of Fredericksburg are less than 10 miles away. Or you can follow the river a few miles to LBJ National Park. Or find your way, for free, any day of the week to Wildseed Farms, the nation’s largest working wildflower farm with over 200 acres. Or just sneak away to Bat Tunnel State Park. If you decide to take a magical trip 28 miles north of the River House to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, wear your sneakers or hikers. By the time you reach the top of the pink granite dome, you’ll feel on top of the world. Come back to earth with a trip to tiny, iconic Luckenbach, where you can drink beer under the oak trees, western dance, and listen to the music the place is known for.

The Ranch House Retreat at Night

While you’re out there, take advantage of the usually great Hill Country weather, and close out the night outside with a roaring fire in the firepit. Or cozy up in Ranch House Retreat’s inviting living room, perfect for gathering the group and catching up, watching movies on the flatscreen TV (with attached DVD player), or playing games across the coffee table.
